Asus Eee PC 1005HA-PU17-BK 10.1-Inch Intel Atom Netbook Computer (Crystal Black) Review

Asus Eee PC 1005HA-PU17-BK 10.1-Inch Intel Atom Netbook Computer (Crystal Black)
This is a really well built netbook and has really changed my view about ASUS. I really use it a lot for my school and also hook it up to a 25 inch 1080p monitor and it works fine. Only weakness it has is the os “Windows Starter Edition” and the integrated video chip. I am able to only view standard definition videos. It has pretty good resolution support for external monitor, but can’t play high quality videos really well. That is to be expected because this model does not have the Nvidia ION graphics chip.

Lenovo S10-3t 0651-37U 10.1-Inch Multitouch Netbook (Black) Review

Lenovo S10-3t 0651-37U 10.1-Inch Multitouch Netbook (Black)
I purchased one mainly for working on the fly. I did upgrade the RAM and OS, added MS Office 2007 with OneNote and am very happy with the results. Touch sensitivity is great. Keyboard is nice size and responsive. The key pad takes a little getting used to as I am always tempted to use two fingers which results in jumps, but I’ve gotten past that and it is responsive. Video and voice recording are definitely sufficient for my purposes, though audio playback (as noted elsewhere) isn’t very good through the speakers. The only input issue is the rim around the screen which can make it tough to close application windows with a touch.

Archos 9 PC Tablet (Black) Review

Archos 9 PC Tablet (Black)
This device is Archos’ answer to the iPad and other tablets, and it suceeds on most levels. First, the screen is matte, which while is not as OMG looking as glossy screens, makes the screen more readable since it reduces glare. The screen is pretty responsive for a resistive screen, but the styles is the worst I’ve seen. The tablet has a webcam and USB port, but you’ll have to buy Archos’ dock to get video out and more USB ports. The device is solidly built. Programs start up pretty quickly (a couple seconds). Google Earth runs fairly well (until you add variables like weather, etc, then it slows down). Flash is iffy, while regular resolution Youtube videos run okay, Hulu and Crunchyroll videos running badly (I guess Adobe will fix that with 10.1). I’ve tried Bejeweled 2, which runs slowly, but still playable. HD videos are a big problem because the device uses hardware acceleration, so you can’t use VLC or Mplayer to play mkv files. Regular DVD resolution video runs fine. This device makes a great ereader since you can install your own reader programs like Kindle, BN, whatever. This device really shines a comic viewer–just install your favorite comic viewer, right click on the screen to get to graphics options and rotate it 90 degrees, viola, awesome comic book/manga reader. PDFs load quickly and nicely too.

Dell Inspiron iM10V-2734OBK Mini 10v 10.1-Inch Netbook (Obsidian Black) Review

Dell Inspiron iM10V-2734OBK Mini 10v 10.1-Inch Netbook (Obsidian Black)
Aside from having some buyer’s regret because the price of this item has dropped about 0 since I bought it eight months ago, I have to concede that I like this netbook a lot. I have two full size pc’s (a Mac Airbook and a Sony Vaio), but bought this because I needed something small and convenient to take with me on the road as I am not totally enchanted with my Iphone. For the most part, I use this to respond to emails, surf the net, store photos, and access files. It fits into my purse, weighs maybe 2 lbs, boots up quickly, and the 6v battery give me a lot of time (approx. 7-8 hours)on one charge. It even has a camera, but other than initially testing it out I don’t use it. The keyboard is scaled down, but easy to use and easy to get used to. I can’t comment on Dell phone support because any questions I’ve had have been answered via the online tutorial.
While this clearly doesn’t do everything that a full feature laptop does(no built in cd/rom for starters), I need a pretty basic machine on my travels and am not fussy. I doubt if this would be adequate to support some business applications, but for the casual pc user who doesn’t want to lug around a clumsy and/or heavy pc this is a pretty cool substitute.
I have accessorized this with a keyboard cover which does a great job keeping debris where it belongs, a netbook sleeve, and a chill pad.
The netbook is a good substitute for a pc when you don’t require a workhorse.

Dell Mini 9 Inspiron 910 Laptop Notebook (Black) - Intel® Atom N270 1.6GHz, 1GB DDR2, 8GB HD, 8.9″ WSVGA, Integrated Webcam, Windows XP Home Review

Dell Mini 9 Inspiron 910 Laptop Notebook (Black) - Intel® Atom N270 1.6GHz, 1GB DDR2, 8GB HD, 8.9" WSVGA, Integrated Webcam, Windows XP Home
I’ve been looking for something like this for years to chronicle my motorcycle trips.
I was loathe to give up saddlebag space to a full-size laptop and worried that the heat, dust and vibration of motorcycle travel would kill a laptop with a conventional hard disk drive.
So I started out with travel journals, but I had to wait until I got home to blog my trip stories.
Then, five years ago, I tried blogging from the road with a Palm Treo 300. It was barely adequate. I stepped up to a Treo 600, and then the 700p, but even with the accessory fold-out keyboards, it was still a chore to write blog entries and manage my e-mail. And while the cameras have improved, they’re still pretty bad.
I miss the 3G connectivity with the Mini 9, but Wifi hotspots are becoming more plentiful and it’s getting easier to find them, especially if you have the AT&T deal with Starbucks or McDonald’s.
The SSD (solid state drive) seems perfect for motorcycle travel, since it has no moving parts and is, therefore, less vulnerable to damage from vibration.
The 1GB of RAM and 8GB of SSD capacity are plenty, assuming you don’t junk the Mini 9 up with lots of software. And there isn’t any reason to do that, considering that you can do all of your email, word processing, spreadsheets, calendars, and other office-type functions up in “the cloud” with Google Apps.
I found the Internet Explorer browser’s menu bars took up too much screen real estate, so I installed Google’s streamlined Chrome browser that lets me see more of the web pages at a glance. I also avoid loading up the SSD by using an 8GB SanDisk thumb drive as a D: drive.
I’m not much for touchpads - the Mini 9’s touchpad works fine, I’m just not a touchpad guy - so I use a wireless optical mouse.
The built-in webcam is surprisingly good. I have yet to use it for a live conversation, but it shoots quite acceptable still photos. The SD card reader is perfect for importing images from a higher-quality digital camera.
The smaller keyboard takes a little getting used to. The apostrophe and quote marks and dash/underscore are not where my fingers expected to find them, but it doesn’t take long to make the synaptic adjustment.
The Mini 9 is intelligently designed when it comes to upgrades. You can access its guts by removing two screws and a cover plate on the underside. As I said, it comes with 1GB of RAM. You can double that for about and the conversion takes about 5 minutes.
Computer development being what it is, there are sure to be subsequent generations of netbooks with more speed, power and versatility. But for now, I think the Dell Inspiron Mini 9 is one of the best buys out there.
